Abstract:
The Relationship between self-concept and Locus of control among Palestinian University students in the West Bank . One of the most important areas in the field of psychological research is the locus of control and self-concept which is still considered a priority by psychologists. This study aims at identifying the relationship between self-concept and locus of control among Palestinian University students in the W.B. . It also aims at exploring self-concept and locus of control among the students as influenced by different variables (University , sex, specialization, Academic level, area of residency). To achieve these two objectives a stratified random sample was drawn from the students of the five University in the West Bank : Birzeit, Bethlehem, An Najah, Hebron, and Al-Quds University (College of medical professions). The sample number was (n=269) students (133 male students, 136 female students). The sample was drawn from the two academic levels : the second and the fourth year levels. It represents the following sample were from specialization's : business administration , civil engineering, Islamic law, Nursing, Physiotherapy and mathematics. In order to measure the self-concept., the researcher used the Cooper Smith scale which has been adapted to suit the Jordanian environment . I have used this adapted scale and modified it to suit the Palestinian environment . I have also used the Arabic version of Rotter locus of control scale which has been modified to suit the Palestinian environment . After collecting data and analyzing it statistically. The Following results were obtained : 1. Significant statistical differences in the S. concept: scores were found among the different Universities of the W. Bank. Students of An Najah University have shown lower self-concepts than students of other P. Universities. 2. Significant differences were also found out in locus of control scores among the different Universities. Birzeit students have shown higher locus of control than students of An Najah. 3. No significant. differences were found out in self-concept. scores between males and females. 4. It was found out that males are significantly higher than females in locus of control 5. The results of this study showed a significant difference in self-concept due to specialization. Nursing student where higher in self-concept than students of Islamic studies. 6. No significant differences were found out in locus of control due to specialization. 7. No significant differences were found out in self-concept due to ( 2nd year and 4th year) 8. No significant differences were found out in locus of control due to (2nd year and 4th year) . 9. results of this study showed a significant difference in self- concept due to the area of residency results showed that students living in the mid-areas proved to have higher self-concept than those living in northern areas . It was also found that students of southern areas proved to have higher self-concept when compared to students of northern areas . 10. No significant differences were found out in locus of control due to the area of residency The results of this study showed a correlation relationship between self-concept and locus of control. 11. results showed that the subjects in the sample who showed as higher self-concept have an internal locus of control on the other hand the other subjects who showed lower self-concept have an external locus of control.
