Abstract:
This study presents the interpretation of Surat Al-Ma'ida by Al-Qurtubi and Al-Sha’rawi as a grammatical, semantic and comparative study which addresses the linguistic and grammatical aspects of the interpretation of Surat Al-Ma’ida by Al-Qurtubi and Al-Sha’rawi. In addition to the impact of language and grammar on the two forms of interpretation.
Also, the study addresses the different linguistic and grammatical references that the interpreters have used to explain and clarify Surat Al-Ma’ida. The researcher also highlighted the two approaches used to interpret this Surah as well as discussing what has occurred in their interpretation regarding the homonymy, the contrast, synonymy, as well as truth and metaphor. Moreover, this study addresses the impact of Qur'an reciting regarding the pronunciation of words and its significance in Al-Qurtubi’s and Al-Sha’rawi’s interpretations of Surat Al-Ma’ida.
Several results have been presented through this study. First, both Al-Qurtubi’s and Al-Sha’rawi’s interpretations are collective ones .In other words, both scholars adopted the multi-featured approach such as relying on language, grammar, rhetoric, Fiqh, as well as Qur'an readings and Qur'an sciences. The new aspect in Al-Sha’rawi’s interpretation is the fact that his interpretation is characterized by modernity and links between the Quranic verses and modern sciences in such a way that reveals the degree of scientific miracle found in the Holy Quran. Al-Sha’rawi also talks in his interpretation about the Islamic philosophy and psychology approach and provides evidences from Arab proverbs both in classical and colloquial Arabic language which enriched the value of the interpretation.
Second, in his interpretation of Surat Al-Ma’ida, Al-Qurtubi has used several references such as interpretation books, Quran meanings books, in addition to books written on the Arabic language by famous Arab scholars such as Al-Khalil Bin Ahmed, Sibawayh, Al-Fara’ and Al-Akhfash.
Al-Sha’rawi on the other hand did not mention the references and books from which he drew his linguistic and grammatical material. Also, his grammatical and linguistic resources were very limited compared to those of Al-Qurtubi.
Third, Al-Qurtubi has written and authored in the interpretation and language references which caused his richness in information and knowledge ,while Al-Sha’rawi depended on his tongue and memory and his interpretation was a mere collection of his lectures that he delivered in the mosques
