Abstract:
The study aimed to investigate the effect of using the mathematical modelling strategy on comprehending mathematical concepts and problem solving in the measurement unit among 7th grade students achievement. The study basically tried to answer the question : what is the effect of using the mathematical modelling strategy on mathematical concepts comprehension and problem solving among 7th grade students. To answer the study's question and test it's hypotheses, the researcher conducted a quasi-experimental design. The study was applied to a sample of the students from the primary school of the Martyr Fatima Ghazal for Girls. The sample was divided into two groups, the treatment group and the compared group. The treatment group had studied the measurement unit in the math book in the 7th grade by using the mathematical modelling strategy. While the compared group had studied the unit by using the traditional approach of teaching in the first semester 2013- 2014. The researcher applied this tool of study: -A test to measure the students comprehension at studying the measurement unit in the two groups. And the test was proven right after its validity and reliability were calculated. The value of its reliability was 0.70. - A test to measure the students ability to solve problems in the measurement unit in both groups. And the test was proven right after its validity and reliability were calculated. The value of its reliability was 0.82. To test the hypothesis, the data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the study were as follows : - There is a significant statistical difference ( =α0.05) in comprehending mathematical concepts between the mean of grades of the 7th graders who used the mathematical modelling strategy to learn the measurement unit and the mean of grade of the 7th graders who used the traditional way based on the achievement of the post-test. The results were in favor of the treatment group. - There is a significant statistical difference (α=0.05) in problems solving ability between the mean of grades of the 7th graders who used the traditional way to solve problems and the mean of grade of the 7th graders who used the mathematical modelling strategy based on the achievement of the post-test. The results were in favor of the treatment group. That the mean of the grades of the experiment group was higher than the mean of the grades of the compared group. On the basis of the results, the researcher placed several recommendations as to amend the mathematics curriculum content for all levels by using the mathematical modelling strategy, and produce manuals for all levels that guide teachers how to involve the mathematical modelling and the necessity to of doing practical courses to math teachers to teach them how to use the mathematical modelling that enables the students to resolve real-life problems.
