Abstract:
The study aimed at identifying the effect of using some strategies of solving mathematical equations on Seventh Graders’ achievement in Mathematics through Algebra unit and their opinions about it. The study tried answering the following main question:
What is the effect of using some strategies of solving mathematical equations on Seventh Graders’ achievement in mathematics through Algebra unit and their opinions about it?
To answer the study question, and to test the hypotheses derived from it, the researcher used the experimental approach. The study group consisted of all seventh graders of Tulkarem district (3420 students), (112) of which were chosen from Both Sami Hijazi Boys Secondary School, and Bala’ Primary High School for boys as the study sample who were split into two groups, control group of (60) (the students who studied according to the traditional way) and the experimental group of (55 students) (who studied using some strategies of solving mathematical equations).
A pre-test was administered with the study sample to measure compatibility between the two groups; the control and the experimental, the test trustworthiness was double checked with a group of judges, and the test reliability value was 0.783. The researcher used also a test to measure achievement in mathematics, and the tests’ trustworthiness was double checked with a group of judges, and the test reliability value was 0.736. Researcher conducted interviews with a group of students (40) from the study sample who were picked randomly.
To test the hypotheses after the experiment, the data was analyzed using SPSS, and the outcomes were as follows:
• There is a difference of statistical significance at the significance level (α=0.05), between the means of achievement of the experimental group (using strategies of solving mathematical equations) and the control group (using traditional methods) of the seventh grade students, in favor of the experimental group who studied the Algebra unit using some strategies of solving mathematical equations.
• There is a difference of statistical significance at the significance level (α=0.05) showing the positive perception seventh grade students had regarding the strategies of solving mathematical equations.
Based on the previous results, the study recommends: the importance of enriching school mathematics books with strategies of solving mathematical equations, and to develop manuals for teachers rich with strategies of solving mathematical equations to benefit from when explaining the topics, organizing workshops through which teachers get introduced to the strategies of solving mathematical equations and how to use those strategies in the classroom.
