Abstract:
This study aimed at identifying the degree of job satisfaction of public schools male and female counselors in the West Bank governorates. To this end, a sample of(235) counselors was randomly selected for the study . The researcher developed a questionnaire based on one developed by Majid Abu Farha (1999) dwelling on encouraging and discouraging factors for taking or not taking counseling as a profession. To test its validity, the researcher submitted the questionnaire to a number of referees .Antl to ICSI the reliability of the questionnaire, the researcher used Alpha Cronbaeh Equation for internal consistency .The reliability was ( 0.93).
ln the study , the researcher sought to answer one question : What is the degree of job satisfaction of public Schools counselors , and the impact of demographic variables on it ?
On the basis of this question , the researcher formulated the following hypothesis : There are no statistically significant differences at ( α = 0.05) , in the degree of job satisfaction , among public schools counselors which might be attributed to variables of sex , age, academic, qualification , years of experience , marital status , number of children , level of income , place of living.
ln analysis of data , the researcher used arithmetic means, frequencies , percentages, t - test of independent variables , One Way ANOVA L.S.D test and amoung arithmetic means .
Findings First, it was found that total degree of general average of counselors job satisfaction was moderate .The percentage of response amounted to (66.2%).The relationship with teaching staff domain occupied first place among job satisfaction domains. Its percentage of response was (76.2%).The domain of salary scales came last in order , its percentage of response was (40.2 %).Second , it was found that there were statistically significant differences at( α = 0.05) , in degree of job satisfaction , among public schools counselors due to variables of sex , age , academic qualification , experience , marital status , number of children, place of living , and number of students. However, no statistically significant differences at ( α = 0.05) in degree of job satisfaction , among public schools counselors due to income level variable .
In the light of the study finding, the researcher recommends the following:
- Improving employees salaries given the dire economic conditions in the country.
- Holding educational awareness courses in educational counseling for principals and teachers to explain concept of counseling and remove negative attitude towards it.
- Working towards the technical and physical improvement of educational counseling process.
- Conducting similar studies , in the Gaza Strip , to find out degree of job satisfaction among public schools counselors ,thus allowing comparison between results of this study and the would - be results of such studies.
