Abstract:
This study addressed “The image of sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun (693-741 AH) in the literature of the first Mamluk era”. The importance of this study has stemmed from the important role played by this sultan in maintaining the country of Muslims during a crucial stage in Islamic history; where he overcome a large force for as long as Muslims suffered from its conquer injustice, authoritarian, and domination on them and their country. Nasir Muhammad came and defeated this force at the Battle of Marj Al-Suffar that history recorded, and thus Muslims have enjoyed safety and security a long period of time. My desire to study literature and my enjoyment in the poetry and prose of that era, have led me to search for a subject of literary worth studying. My professor directed me toward this subject, and so I began to collect references and sources, and search the literature’s poetry and prose, till I found a literary group from which image of sultan Muhammad ibn Qalawun can be enclosed and extracted. I found a significant number of previous studies on the poetry and prose of this era, but they do not address the image of al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun in particular, despite his importance and impact. So, this study came to reveal this character, and devise its positive and negative images through the literature. I have been adopted on the integrative approach in the completion of this study. My study shows that scholars of Mamluk era have followed sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in his residence and traveling, and described him in peace and war, in delight and sadness, and in his lifetime and after his death. They described him in two images, one positive and the other negative.
