Abstract:
This is a theoretical study of the concepts of stylistics. It focuses on the subject of stylistics in contemporary (modem) criticism. It also attempts to relate stylistics to/with rhetoric, criticism, language, and critical heritage. In this study I have tried to underline two major points: First, the inadequacies and perfection of the study of stylistics; second, the employment of stylistics as a critically modern methodology or approach for the study of literal analysis and the discovery of linguistic variations. In my study 1 have relied heavily on Al-Sakaki’s work in rhetoric in his book Muftah Al-ulum. I have tried to find a connection between Al-Sakaki’s work in rhetoric and the works of other literary stylistics. I have found great connections between classical rhetoric and modern contemporary stylistics. In its last component, I have applied the theory of contemporary stylistics to some excerpts of Antara’s and Darwishe’s poetry for the purpose of underscoring the keen connection between the study of contemporary stylistics, on the one hand, and rhetoric and classical criticism, on the other hand.
