The Impact of the City of Ramallah on the Characteristics of Population and Construction in theTown of Beitunia

This study examines the impact of the city of Ramallah on urban growth, development and expansion of the town of Beitunia since the middle of seventh decade of the twentieth century until the present day. This period has witnessed a rise in the number of residents in the town of Beitunia.This has been noted through the expansion of constructions, housing and diversity in land use. The agricultural land has been attacked in order to meet the needs of the expatriate population in the study area. The population numbers for 2010 has risen in Beitunia by 1654%. The importance of this study lies in addressing the most important factors that influence the increasing of urbanization in the town of Beitunia and its transition over a short period of time from a small village into a town and then into a city because of the rapid evolution and growth of the city of Ramallah through changing into a temporary capital for the Palestinian Authority. Accordingly, this study has been divided into four chapters; where the first chapter included the natural and demographic background for the study area and to shed light on the determinants of demographic and natural resources therein. The second chapter has focused on rural and urban background of the region. The third chapter has focused on the effects of urbanization on both the environment, agricultural lands and on infrastructure. The fourth chapter has focused on constructional expansion in Beitunia and the comparison between the situation in 2004 and 2010 in addition to the most important recommendations and conclusions reached by the research in addition to the list of sources and references that have been utilized. This study has followed the scientific, descriptive, clarifying, aerial photographs for several years including 2004 and 2010 ,topographic maps that show the structure of the region, the use the analytical method and personal interviews, which reflects the extent of the change in the nature of the region. The study concluded that the town of Beitunia represents combination of rural – urban area, as it combines rural and urban features. We find also a random mixing in patterns of using land, with continuous erosion of urban activities at the expense of agricultural land in addition to the existence of rural and urban thought and behaviors among inhabitants. In the end, it has been concluded that it is necessary to put proper planning to solve the problems that face town of Beitunia through its random growth associated with the city of Ramallah with poverty in the infrastructure in addition to the lack of consistency in the buildings, and the prevalence of the phenomenon of erosion of farming land that has eroded actually due to the urban expansion of the city of Ramallah.
