Allusions and the Intertextual Space in Translation

Abstract: 

Studies of intertextuality go as far as maintaining that there is no original text. Texts from anintertextual point of view are seen as a tissue of relations between signs and that by deorignatinga text one can come to the conclusions that all sentences and stretches of language that we utter are virtually said by someone before us. This research paper aims at investigating allusion as one of the most visible forms of intertextuality within the context of the intertextual space; writers borrow signs from different texts to relate a message to readers and the space that a sign travels through from one text to another is referred to as the “intertextual space”. As signs (in this case allusions) travel between texts, they gain different shades of meanings that may be of vital importance for a translator to be acquainted with. Translators therefore are urged to account for the added meanings that allusions gain as they travel between texts and as they cross cultural boundaries.
