Osteoporosis review and current available therapies

Abstract: 

Osteoporosis is a chronic, progressive bone disease in which bone resorption exceeds bone formation leading to a reduction in bone mineral density and disruption of bone micro architecture. Patients with osteoporosis have an increased risk of fracture. The incidence of osteoporosis increases with age and occurs most frequently in post menopausal women.
Osteoporosis poses a significant morbidity and cost burden to society with an important negative impact on the health and quality of life of osteoporotic patients. A number of treatments have been clearly identified to reduce fracture risk in well designed randomized controlled trials.
An overview regarding osteoporosis with emphasis on current pharmacological and non pharmacological therapies will be discussed.
